Wiruungga Dungiir
Wiruungga Dunggiirr is a respected Aboriginal Elder, cultural custodian, and wisdom keeper of the Gumbaynggirr (also written Gumbaynggir/Namba Gumbaynggirr) Nation of northern New South Wales, Australia. His name is commonly translated as “Leader of the Koalas”, a title that reflects both spiritual responsibility and guardianship of land, animals, and lore.
Cultural role and lineage
He is recognized as a Dreamtime knowledge holder, storyteller, and ceremonial leader, carrying teachings transmitted orally through ancestral lines. His work is rooted in Country, the living relationship between land, people, spirit, animals, and law. Wiruungga emphasizes that land is not owned, but belongs to itself, and humans are caretakers with obligations rather than rights.
Beyond Australia, Wiruungga has traveled internationally, participating in gatherings of Indigenous elders, wisdom keepers, and spiritual leaders. His role often centers on cultural bridge-building—creating dialogue between Indigenous traditions, environmental movements, and non-Indigenous communities. He is especially known for speaking about healing disconnection, both ecological and spiritual, caused by colonial systems.
